Cindy Dunn gave me the number 8 .. so here are 8 things you may not know about me. Like my status and I will give you a number. 1) I was born in Kodiak, Alaska. Had a couple of seizures when I was 1, and was put on phenobarbitol for 5 years and considered cured. Moved out of Alaska when I was 1, so dont remember a danged thing about it. My dad was in the Coast Guard there, so I just LOVE that weather channel show Coast Guard Alaska, especially the ones based in Kodiak, because they give me a little insight into what my dad did to support us during my growing up years. 2) I am half-Chinese (my mom was born in China and moved to the US when she was 12ish). My grandfather (Lau Yeh) was paralyzed on his entire left side due to a stroke, so my only memories of him are in a hospital bed creating these incredible and amazing Chinese paintings non-stop (he would place his left hand on the rice paper to keep it still, then paint with his right hand). There must be thousands of them, and every one Ive seen is simply awesome in composition, detail, realism - unbelievable. He died when I was 6, and Im still bitter about not being allowed to attend his funeral :-p. My grandmother (Lau Lau) was a midwife, which I think is the coolest thing ever, because she did that eons before it became the in thing to do. 3) I twirled a baton, a flag and a rifle throughout high school. One at a time, though! I went to high school in Sandwich, Massachusetts, and it is not easy to twirl a metal baton marching in a parade when the temps are 40-degress or less, and keep any control of it. I also learned pretty quickly to leave a LOT of clearance when flinging my baton above my head while wearing that tall furry hat with the furry plume in order to avoid knocking myself sideways off my neck (I was a klutz then just as I am a klutz now). 4) I worked 40 hours a week throughout high school and somehow breezed through with straight As (well, almost). College was a real jolt, to say the least, because I actually had to study to get decent grades and I had not a single clue how to do that. I paid for my 99% of my college tuition, board and expenses myself (with help from the ever present student loans, plus a couple of tiny grants and small scholarships) by working 2-3 jobs in addition to taking a full load of classes, so that may not have helped my cause. 5) On April Fools Day when I was 13, I tried to teach myself how to do a dive cartwheel (where you get your feet off the ground before your hands touch the ground) and, well, lets just say the timing was way off. I ended up at the hospital for 8 days with two operations to fix a compound fracture that bent my forearm into a pretty good looking teepee. It was my left arm and Im left handed; be aware that writing math homework with your opposite hand is a real trip. None of my friends believed I was in the hospital when my mom called to tell them what happened (thought it was an April Fools joke), so I had no visitors until April 2, lol! 6) Many of you know I have been a ski instructor for 23 years and counting (since 1990). Some may not know I didnt learn to ski until I was 17, AFTER I moved from New England to Ohio (yes, Im a dumb@$$). I lived in New England for 5 years and never learned how to ski. Thats what being a straight-A student gains a person! 7) I grew up everywhere, since my dad was a lifer in the Coast Guard. Because I am a severe introvert until I get to know a person (yes, really, I am a clam until Im comfortable; then watch out baby!!), I hated every move because I had to leave my hard won friends behind and start again from scratch in the new place. But then I got some lifelong friends out of all those moves, so I guess I win :D. It also means Ive been to almost every state (if not 40, its pretty close) in one way or another. 8) I have a HUGE extended family that brings me great joy! My dad grew up in a family of 9 kids, and my mom grew up in a family of 10 kids. So, I have a BUNCH of aunts and uncles, and scores and scores of cousins of every flavor. In choosing a college to attend, I was sick of never being able to attend family events, so I chose Ohio University sight unseen (in ATHENS, OH, not osu in columbus) so Id be within driving distance of Cincinnati where many of my dads side family were concentrated - my grandparents were both still alive at the time, and since everything Buschur seemed to gravitate toward Grandmas and Grandpas house, that seemed like the right thing to do. It was, too :-).
