Circulation profiles Louise Pilote, MD, MPH, PhD, who recently published a paper in the journal. Circulation: Tell us about the key findings from your recent article in Circulation. Dr. Pilote: We conducted an observation study of patients with atrial fibrillation who are on dialysis. Our cohort was obtained from administrative databases in Quebec and Ontario, Canada. About half of the patients were on warfarin so we were able to compare stroke and bleeding outcomes to patients not on warfarin. We failed to identify any apparent benefit of warfarin in terms of stroke but clearly identified more bleeding. We reviewed all similar studies and the overall tendency is in keeping with the finding in our study. A large randomized trial is needed in this population.
