Cities have popularly elected governments but City Halls are - TopicsExpress

Cities have popularly elected governments but City Halls are typically dominated by banks, big real-estate firms, utility monopolies, and other powerful business interests. Plans for neighborhood development, new sports stadiums and other taxpayer-funded projects, school reform, taxes, etc. come from these business lobbies. (In DC, its the elite & secretive Federal City Council.) When they dont get their way, they go crazy with rage, which is what happened in Richmond, Calif. when Green Mayor Gayle McLaughlin and a progressive city council defied foreclosing banks and Chevron. Chevron wants to get rid of our Green Party mayor and progressive City Council majority because theyve challenged the company on property taxes and pollution. Thats why in 2012 Chevron spent $422,000 backing a single candidate for one of the seven council seats that pays $16,830 a year. The company wants to return to the days when the council majority was known as the Chevron 5... Mayor McLaughlin: We get all their pollution not only in the air, but they pollute our elections, too. If theyd reduce their emissions and withdraw from our elections, theyd be respecting our health and democracy.
