Citizens Police Academy Starts Tuesday, February 17, 2015 The Citizens Police Academy gives citizens a unique insight into their Police Department. Academy attendees get instruction on a variety of law enforcement subjects. The classes are taught by men and women of the Oklahoma City Police Department who perform these tasks on a daily basis. Classes meet once a week on Tuesday evenings, from 6 pm till 9 pm, at the Police Training Center, for 12 consecutive weeks. Students get a real insiders look at the internal operations of the Department. They learn about the different Bureaus, Divisions, and Units within the Police Department. Presentations on Gangs; Criminal Intelligence, Fatality Accident investigations, Crime Scene Investigations, and Homicide Investigation are a just a few of the topics presented to the Academy. Not all the presentations are conducted in the classroom. Students will see demonstrations of the less-lethal force options employed by officers such as the TASER and KEID (beanbag shotgun). They will travel to the Departments Pistol Range and observe the Tactical Unit conduct a mock training raid, watch the bomb squad as they detonate a variety of explosive charges, observe as a K-9 officer and his partner demonstrate their teamwork skills, and visit with the pilots of Air-One as they describe the Department’s airship in an up close setting with the pilot and helicopter. An additional outing takes the class to the City of Oklahoma City’s Communication Center for an observational tour of the 911 Center as they watch operators and dispatchers at work. These are just a few of the things that Citizen Police Academy students will experience. Applicants to the CPA are screened through a criminal background check before being accepted into a session. The Training Center continually accepts applications and screens applicants. Successful applicants are notified well in advance of the upcoming session. Classroom instruction combined with hands-on demonstrations provides an exciting and fun way to learn about The City of Oklahoma City’s Police Department.
