Citizenship certificate is the primary legal document which establishes a legal relationship with the state thereby providing an identity to the person. 43 lakh people are stateless in Nepal. The proposed provision by the CA that restricts mothers to confer citizenship independently to their children will further increase the number of stateless in Nepal. 1000 Nepalese are uniting to raise their voice for the guarantee of citizenship in the name of mother in the upcoming constitution. As soon as the number of people in Tundikhel reaches 1000, we will rally around Tundikhel, voicing our demand to specify the provision that ensures the acquisition of citizenship in the name of mother i.e. citizenship in the name of Father OR Mother and NOT Father AND Mother, which has been proposed by the CA. After the rally we will collect the signature of all the 1000 people to be presented to the CA. The event will continue every week. The number of people to be gathered will increase from 1000 to 2000 and 2000 to 3000 and so on until and unless the concerned CA Committee amend the AND with OR.
