City Council meets at 6 p.m. today and 7 p.m. Thursday. Council notes are below. Marion Blackburn - District 3 – City Council - MarionBlackburn The holidays are here! Our tree is illuminated at Five Points Plaza, lights are up throughout our Uptown District, and holiday music is everywhere. I send my warmest wishes to you this holiday season. City Council meets at 6 p.m. today (Monday) and 7 p.m. Thursday. Our most significant items are a review of the final Dickinson Avenue Market study, as well as an update on the parking deck clocks. Good news- thanks to Uptown Greenville, we have grant funding from the West Memorial Fund, and the Rachel and Jack Edwards Memorial Fund to purchase four clocks for the parking deck. You may remember, when the parking deck came in over budget, these attractive clocks were temporarily removed from the design. Thank you, Uptown Greenville, and the West and Edwards Memorial Funds for this great opportunity. These clocks will assure us of the attractive parking deck we have hoped for in our center city. On Thursday, we will hear from the appointed bond committee membership on its findings. Among them is a recommendation, passed by a small margin, that would direct the city to invest $12 million in a sports complex away from our City Center. It would primarily serve non-city residents. It concerns me that when we have vast, broad parks needs in our city that we would instead focus on a sports complex. This idea is not part of our parks master plan, nor has it been requested by you, the residents of Greenville. Instead, you have requested parks improvements and in many cases, new parks to serve unmet needs. For instance, the skateboard community has for years requested a modest park; residents of the university community have requested features such as sand volleyball (and private funding is available). Residents in Greenville’s northeast quadrant have no parks at all. Eastside park on 10th Street East needs trails and upkeep. It would concern me to focus on a new item such as a sports complex with so many unmet needs in our community.
