City Officials complete process in hiring City Manager After narrowing the list of City Manager applicants from fifty-two to three, Bristol officials finalized a contract to offer a city manager candidate in a called meeting this morning. In September 2013, City Council hired the Mercer Group, a nationally recognized, Atlanta-based company, whose clients are primarily municipal and state governments requesting assistance in executive recruitment. Their client list includes the cities of Arlington, VA; Akron, OH; Austin, TX; Dallas, TX and others throughout the United States. The group was directed to conduct a nationwide search to fill the City Manager’s position vacated by Jeff Broughton who resigned in July 2013, to take a position with University of Tennessee Municipal Technical Advisory Service. The Mercer Group received fifty-two applications and narrowed that number down to eighteen viable candidates for City Council’s review. After Council’s evaluation, the number of applicants was reduced to twelve. Members of Council met in advertised public meetings on four occasions to discuss the process and narrow down the list of contenders to three. Those three candidates were invited to interview with council, one declined. After interviews were completed, Council selected one candidate and directed staff to begin the contract negotiation process. In a Called City Council meeting this morning, Council approved the contract and directed staff to prepare the document for full execution at the 6:00 PM Called City Council Meeting prior to the 7:00 PM City Council Workshop in the Ewell Easley Annex.
