City of Calgary? What Happened to leadership from the elected officials. Right now there are many many citizens suffering this holiday season due to your in action on the Affordable Housing Secondary Suite issue that you keep kicking down the road. Every time you kick the issue, you kick the citizens who are most vulnerable. 33 Reports have already been created for the city council on this important subject so what do they do when they get a chance to make a difference and make a decision - they request 4 MORE reports. Calgary, as a city, has been known to be one of the most welcoming, warm and compassionate cities in the world. In fact, wherever I travel around the world all I hear from those who have visited here is just how fantastic this city is (even from those who haven’t visited, which proves that our reputation is strong). However, a sad trend is starting to creep into these conversations. Our reputation is starting to get tarnished due to a perceived lack of compassion for those with lower income who are having an incredibly difficult time finding affordable rental housing. Yes, (sadly), the inaction or inability of our current council to deal with the “Safe, Affordable Secondary Suite” issue is, frankly embarrassing. And all homeowners, voters, landlords and especially RENTERS need to get their message heard. We need safe and affordable suites, quickly. Especially given the 1.8% vacancy - especially given that most other world class cities have already solved the problems you continue to debate - especially given that rents are skyrocketing and thousand more are set to move into the city.
