City released report on red light cameras (find it in second section). A couple thoughts: Correlation does not equal causation. The low numbers of crashes make the percentage drops seem more impressive. Some intersections had very, very few run-red-light crashes before cameras were even installed. In order to show the cameras are actually changing behavior, we would need to look at pre and post crash data for all intersections - not just the ones monitored. Crash data over time looks bad. But when you break it out intersection by intersection, year by year, its not so bad. Im all for reducing crashes, but Im very skeptical of this approach. If we were really serious about improving traffic safety, wed design our streets better, lower speed limits and generally force cars to slow down. If these cameras are doing such a significant job keeping us safe, why not expand program to all intersections instead of just focusing on 32?
