City water is safe officials say For the second time this year Barberton officials are reporting elevated levels of haloacetic acids and trihalomethanes (TTHM) in drinking water supplied by the city. City officials again state the levels detected do not pose an immediate risk to a person’s health. The first notice was for the first quarter. Testing by an independent laboratory indicates the average levels of the two chemical substances over the past year were higher than Ohio Environmental Protection Agency limits. The OEPA requires the notification. Haloacetic acids and TTHM are a byproduct of chlorine used to disinfect the water reacting with organic and inorganic particles. The city is working on reducing the levels including construction of an oxygenation system at the reservoir, extending intakes so raw water is drawn from further out rather from the base of the dam and using laboratory evaluations through the University of Akron.
