Civic Lesson from a Four Year Old. One early Sunday morning, - TopicsExpress

Civic Lesson from a Four Year Old. One early Sunday morning, about three months ago, I went to pick up my daughter, Ayodele Fayemi, from Murtala Mohammed Airport in Lagos. We left the airport, together with her two sons, my two grandsons to be exact, at about 5am. Since it was still dark, with scanty cars on the road, I did not obey the traffic lights, customarily the practice of most Lagoscians. Grandpa, you just ran a red light, my four year old grandson said, succinctly. I know. You see.... But grandpa, you should not be running a red light. When the light is red, it means stop. When it is green, then you go. He must have thought that I did not know what the traffic lights meant. I was not arrogant enough to tell him that I knew the meaning of traffic lights even before his mother was born. His mother told him that he should keep quiet, that he talked too much. I did not think so. I was marvelled at his civic knowledge, at his understanding of how a sane society should operate. I was once sane. Until some insane people from my insane society taught me how to be insane like them. They said, dont stop for traffic light at night o. Armed robbers will just snatch your car there o. And no police around to help you.
