Civil/Coastal Engineers About the job: CSIR Built Environment (BE) unit has vacant positions for Civil/Coastal Engineersin the Hydraulic (Water and Coastal) Infrastructure Engineering competence area. The positions are based in Stellenbosch. Key responsibilities: Contribute to applied research of coastal structures and waves at the Coastal and Hydraulics Laboratory of the CSIR in Stellenbosch. Undertake physical model tests on conceptual designs; be involved in numerical modelling of ports and coastal structures; and carry out inspections of prototype coastal structures or related fieldwork. Ship motion studies, modelling and simulation (ship manoeuvring and moored ships). Use of standard software for the design of coastal structures, for wave analysis and wave diffraction, refraction and attenuation into ports. Ability to use AutoCAD will be an advantage. Qualifications, skills and experience: A Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering with postgraduate specialisation in coastal engineering. A Master’s degree in civil/coastal engineering will be an added advantage. At least five years’ experience in the fields of civil and coastal engineering. Experience in coastal structures and/or port/harbour design and/or ship motion studies and/or physical and numerical modelling. A basic theoretical knowledge of coastal and port/harbour engineering design and practice. Demonstrable research skills, proposal and report-writing and project management skills. Good interpersonal and team skills. Computer (MS software), programming and IT skills. Ability to work independently as well as in a team. Problem-solving, solution-seeking orientation. Excellent English communication, presentation and writing skills, including the publication of technical outputs. Networking abilities to proactively establish and maintain links with internal and external stakeholders and clients as well as the research community.
