Civil society counsels ASUU, FG over strike A coalition of civil society organisations has pleaded with chapters of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to endorse the submission of President Goodluck Jonathan forwarded to them by the Dr Nasir Fagge-led national leadership of the union. Rising from its roundtable dialogue held in Kaduna over the lingering strike, the coalition, made up of 12 civil society organisations in its communique, pleaded “with ASUU to consider the intervention of President Goodluck Jonathan and the National Assembly, the pleas of prominent individuals, senior citizens, and concerned Nigerians to immediately call off the strike action.” The coalition also urged “government to critically look at the demands of ASUU and put in place mechanisms for a robust implementation of the offers made as a sincere intervention to holistically address the challenges facing university system” in Nigeria. The communique particularly called on ASUU to “in good conscience consider the plight of Nigerian Students, the concerns of parents and guardians, the economic melt-down of host communities of Universities and the overall impact on the socioeconomic development of the country.
