Civilian gun sales triple. Police spend hundreds of thousands stocking up on riot gear. All because they anticipate that a grand jury is going to deliver a verdict a lot of people are going to think unjust. Actually, a ratification of something they thought was radically unjust months ago. Or perhaps you believe that people riot for no particular reason. You know, just because. Actually, you can test that logic. It would be ratified if it were a common behavior -- so you do that, out in your suburbs, on a pretty regular basis, right? The police have to hose you down with chemical agents pretty regularly, because people do that? Or people riot because something has pissed them off. Thats a possibility too. Just putting it out there. The normative position is to tell these people that they should trust the system, and if they do not trust the system, then something is wrong with them, and they have to accept that. And if they do not behave as if they trust the system, then the system will deploy tear gas, rubber bullets and if necessary live ammo until everyone understands that the system is just. Oh its a godawful mess and I have no solution. Who approves of mob violence? But I approve even less of orderly, institutional, governmental violence. Were preparing for the reaction of people who are going to be told there is no redress within the system. Of course they will seek it outside the system, and it then looks like the system must show that it is nothing more than a members-only monopoly on the legitimate use of violence.
