Civility is popping up as a dominant concept at the center of social struggles, probably because it encapsulates the failure of liberalism to deliver justice. The liberal ideal of a civil conversation among equals misrepresents increasingly mundane and ubiquitous confrontations in which one side wants to talk and the other, more powerful side simply attacks. Those seeking a voice are condemned as uncivil. This great blog post lays it out: In order to challenge the logic of repressive tolerance that divides us into good, civil subjects and bad, disorderly ones, we cannot seek to rescue the most eligible of the socially stigmatized: those [nearest, I think] to the center of what Rubin calls “the charmed circle.” We must directly confront the apparatuses that divide the acceptable from the unacceptable.
