Clammers strongly cautioned as high-wind warning is in effect LONG BEACH — The National Weather Service in Portland has issued a high-wind warning in effect until 9 p.m. Saturday night. Winds are from the south at 25 to 35 mph with gusts to 70 mph, mainly in exposed locations at higher elevations. Strongest winds most likely between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Power outages and significant tree damage are possible. People participating in the razor clam dig Saturday night should be extremely cautious. The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife said Saturday morning, “Do not turn your back to the sea. Low tide is expected at 8:22 p.m. Saturday evening. Clam diggers need to be alert for waves sweeping up the beaches farther than usual due to high wind and storm surge conditions. Waves will be strong enough to sweep a person, pet or child out to sea.” A high wind warning means a hazardous high wind event is expected or occurring. Sustained wind speeds of at least 40 mph or gusts of 58 mph or more can lead to property damage.
