Clamour for Governor On Religious Basis Unhealthy for Nasarawa By Hir Joseph Daily Trust The clamour for a Christian governor in Nasarawa State ahead of 2015 election has received a knock from the executive secretary of the states Christians Pilgrims Welfare Board, Barrister Clement Ode, who regretted that the proponents are reducing the issue to that of religion. Ode, who observed that in recent times, campaigns have centered around calls for a Christian governor ahead of the 2015 poll, said it is a dangerous development that spells disaster for the young state. Calls from the Christians-dominated Nasarawa-North zone, which is yet to produce a governor, have intensified with politicians of the Christian faith insisting that it is the turn of a Christian governor from the zone, to govern the state. But Ode insisted that the agitation will take the shine off the exalted seat, as it will polarize the state along religious lines, a development which he said will spell doom for a state just recovering from long months of ethnic killings. The first two governors, Abdullahi Adamu and Aliyu Akwe Doma are from the Afo and Alago ethnic groups. Both ethnic groups are indigenous in Nasarawa, and have Christians, Muslims and traditional worshipers. Adamu is a Muslim, as Doma. Governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura, a Gwandara, took over from Doma. Gwandara is an indigenous ethnic group, and has Christians, Muslims and traditional worshipers. By choice, Al-Makura is a Muslim, and which is personal to him and his God. How does ones religion play a role on the political scene, Barrister Ode queried. He said the three leaders enjoyed votes from across the three dominant religions in the state, just as he added that there is no one single religion of the three that can stand alone and produce Nasarawas governor, or any position for that matter.
