Clark Gable is on tonight, gone with the wind starts at five. I lecture to my students about the significance of understanding this movie, to the contents of the time. I once heard Spike Lee said, that it was one of the most racist films that hes ever seen. to me its about a struggle of a aristocratic Irish family,, thats very nouveau riche, and acquire slaves and land. A lot of this depends on shivaree of southern aristocrats. And fighting for what they thought at the time, was right. In examining this film, you seem working-class and lower working class of whites, and also the difference between house slaves and Field hands. also the true strength of women,,, Vivien Leigh is playing a 16-year-old girl, who is a widow at 17. Clark Gable had a lot of influence on this film. Getting the director, George Kukar fired, because of his leaning more towards a more feminine film. and have Victor Fleming, more of a mans mans director, to finish the film. You have to also remember that the film,, wizard of Oz came out that same year. Clark Gable, didnt want to speak with a southern accent, he felt that he would give disservice to southern accents, Hatty McDaniel got bless her, was the rock of the plantation. Also look for great performances throughout this film, butterfly McQueen, I know nothing about burping no babies. also Leslie Howard and Olivia deHavilland, Leslie Howard passed away three years after this film, shot down by the German air Force during World War II,, and also look for George Reeves, as one of the twins in the beginning of the film. this movie was independently produced, and remember to watch it with a very open eye,, an understanding of the times,, peace
