Clashes in Jerusalem today represent an apex not a sudden crisis. Israel has been steadily removing (aka ethnically cleansing) Palestinian East Jerusalemites for decades and has accelerated that process in the last decade. Tactics include a mix of martial and administrative laws: retroactive taxes, residency revocation, lack of public services, exclusion from the job market, limited urban housing funds, home demolitions, settler takeovers, forced evictions, impunity for Israeli on Palestinian violence, and restricted access to holy sites. The mundane is in fact alarming. Israel does this in the name of establishing a unified capital of Israel notwithstanding that its illegal annexation of East Jerusalem in 1980 that has not been recognized or the fact that East Jerusalem falls squarely within both international law (UNSC 242, 338) as well as the Oslo Accords political terms as Palestinian territory. This escalation highlights the impotence of even the most moderate approaches to the conflict and more importantly, the price of Israeli impunity. As clashes escalate in Jerusalem - it will provide yet another cover under which Israel will intensify its ethnic cleansing campaign with added vigor and it will do it in the name of security. Resist the myopic focus on violence in Jerusalem by re-centering the discourse on Israels insidious practices and goals.
