Clashes in Shopian in south Kashmir Aug 18, 2013, 04.38AM IST TNN [ M Saleem Pandit ] SRINAGAR: Clashes took place in Shopian town on Saturday following allegations of excessive use of police force against residents. The police used tear gas to disperse the protesters who pelted stones on them. According to reports, panic gripped when police barged into the houses in Khanday Mohalla while chasing the protesters. The chaos increased when loudspeakers of the Mosques were switched on and announcements came from everywhere asking people to come out of their houses to protest against what they called "the high handedness of police". Soon after the announcements amid stone pelting and heavy tear gas shelling, administration deployed large number of police and CRPF personnel in the Bonebazar area of the town and people were not allowed to move out of their houses. Reports said that Bonebazar area gave the look of some war field because large contingent of police and CRPF personnel were deployed in the area. Heavy tear gas shelling was on in the area to disperse the protesters when the reports last came in. Mumtaz Ahmad, SP, Shopian said, "In fact we have registered cases against four people of the area, it is these four miscreants who create trouble only to avoid their arrest.
