Classic Rock Radio (Dot EU) 22 Nov 2014 *Cool Bass Players - Tal Wilkenfeld* If youre a Jeff Beck fan, you know who Tal is, and whats she capable of doing. A superior bass player, so much so legends recognize her talent. From Sydney Australia. Started playing at fourteen. Bios state she took up electric guitar first, and within a year was focusing on the bass instead. Hating school, by the early 2000s shes in the States, and as time goes by, has developed a reputation to where shes known as a solid bass player world-wide. Of course playing for Jeff Beck helps. As does working with Herbie Hancock, Steve Lukather (Toto), or Trevor Rabin (ex Yes). As for the year 2014, heres what her latest newsletter says (I received this in yesterday / this mornings email): Tal Wilkenfeld has had a busy year rich in musical reward. While awaiting the releases of recordings she did for Joe Walsh (with Ringo Starr), Brian Wilson (with Jeff Beck) and Toto, her gritty grooves graced all of Ryan Adams’ critically-acclaimed, self-titled effort, and she supplied a McCartney-esque melodic and tonal presence on “If I Could Be Anywhere” (with Jim Keltner on drums and Benmont Tench on organ), from Jackson Browne’s latest, Standing In the Breach. Most exciting of all, you can hear Tal’s vocal debut on Amazon’s Christmas 2014 album All is Bright. Her contribution is a simply stunning, intimate ballad reinterpretation of Mariah Carey’s 1994 yule classic, “All I Want for Christmas Is You.” Tal also has a brand new YouTube channel, where you can see footage of her riveting vocal-with-bass-accompaniment performance of Leonard Cohen’s “Chelsea Hotel” at the Fonda Theater. The magical evening included Tal receiving Bass Player’s 2013 Young Gun Award, presented by super-producer Don Was and bassmaker Roger Sadowsky. Rounding out Tal’s 2013 discography are the DVDs Experience Montreux: Quincy Jones & Herbie Hancock and Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festival 2013 (with Jeff Beck), and an appearance on Steve Lukather’s album, Transition. What will 2015 bring? The world awaits. Uncle Gs Closing Statement: As do we! Can only assume things get even better from here. Tal Wilkenfeld is indeed a young lady bass player worth keeping up with. Lets Be Cool: Please subscribe to Tals new official YouTube channel, and give the video a thumbs up. The performance certainly deserves it. Youll be glad you did.
