Classroom Classics: 9/2/2013 My Dear Deer On Saturday, I was sitting in my favorite, tan chair watching a baseball game. Suddenly, my wife, Barb, called over to me from the kitchen sink where she was washing some veggies. I asked her, “What do you need me for right now?” She responded, “You need to see your new friend out back.” Somehow I just knew what she was talking about. I was right. It was Mr. Deer, himself. I walked over to him and looked out the window. Sure enough he was back. All week long I had seen him out front nibbling my flowers. He didn’t kill anything, so I had just left him alone. On Saturday, he was just nibbling some clover and that was all. Next, he walked over towards my veggie garden. Now I was really getting nervous. Would he dare eat anything in my garden? I grabbed my trusty cell phone. My dad just loves my stories of the tricky deer in my garden. I waited until he was close enough and took a picture of him with my cell phone. Next he wandered over to my compost garden. Now what was he going to do? Earlier in the day, I had cut up some pineapple for my wife and had put the scraps in the compost pile. “No, he would not like pineapple.” I said to myself. I was wrong. He reached his long, brown, strong neck into the pile and started to have his desert. He ate pineapple, strawberries, and melons. I must admit he was very neat. He ate every piece I had dropped in there. While he was doing this, I again, took a picture of him with my cell phone. After finishing his supper, he walked over to my favorite evergreen bushes. Now I was getting worried. So I walked quietly out onto the deck to take a closer look. He spotted me, but never moved. After about 3 minutes, he made a sound that sounded like a bull, but he would not run away from me. I took about 4 steps down the steps towards him. Finally, he walked away from me and tiptoed into the woods. I’m sure I will see Mr. Deer sometimes in the next few days.
