Cleaning Daylily Beds This post is for my Daylily Friends and just for DAYLILIES I made this post last year but I know lots of people missed it. You may have snow on the ground today but in just a few days Spring will be here. I use to dread the job of cleaning the daylily beds of all the growth that arrived every spring. Here are some pictures of just what my beds would look like. In Picture # 1 just about all you can see is the weeds that have a purple top when in bloom. Here in Tennessee they call it Hen Bit for some reason. You can barely see any daylily plants that should be visible. I am going to tell you how I clean them, this is the way I do it and it is very easy to clean the whole patch easely and quickly. I go to the local Farmers Co-Op and buy a gallon of 2-4-D. I mix exactly 2 oz. of 2-4-D per gallon of water and spray the whole thing. If daylily foliage is visible I try not to spray right onto it. The spray does not harm any of my daylilies as you will see in pictures 2,3 and 4. Picture #1 was taken on 04-09-2014, #2 taken 04-18-2014, #3 taken 04-24-2014 and Picture # 4 taken 05-02-2014. On week 2 you can tell by the color if you missed some and spot spray them. On week 2 you can also see if any grass that is present and spray that with POAST.. Poast will not harm any of your plants. It will only kill grass.Poast is also mixed exactly 2 oz. per gallon. Three weeks from start to a clean daylily patch, cost less that $5.00 worth of the 2-4-D , about $ 10.00 of Poast and less than 2 hours work. There are lots of different ways to clean a daylily patch this is just the way a lazy man does his. I also like the fact it cost so little to do it this way. You can see in picture 4 how the daylilies are thriving and doing great.
