Clear Lakes Disney just misses at Willits By staff reports Updated: 10/23/2013 10:58:26 PM PDT WILLITS -- Racing at the 2.87-mile Brooktrails course for the second time this month, several Clear Lake Cardinals posted solid times on Wednesday during a four-team cross country meet in Willits. The three-loop course beneath the redwoods proved to be a bonus on a warm fall day, according to Clear Lake coach Peter Stanley, as several Cardinals improved their marks from the last time they ran at Brooktrails. Varsity boys Freshman Robert Swoboda of Willits and Connor Disney of Clear Lake locked up in back-and-forth race in the varsity boys division, staying within a yard of each other nearly the entire way. It was a big duel, Stanley said. Connor led the first loop and Swoboda the second. With about 300 yards left Swoboda opened up a five-yard lead and he had just a little more left at the end. Swoboda won in 17 minutes, 29 seconds while Disney crossed the finish line in 17:34. Owen Lawler of Clear Lake ran a solid third in 18:07. He never challenged the top two but he also was never challenged by the fourth-place runner, Stanley said. Alex Beare also cracked the top 10 for Clear Lake, placing seventh in 19:00. Alex Beare had a real good race, Stanley said. Willits won in team scoring with 29 to Clear Lakes 35 and Cloverdales 60. Girls Angela Romero (20:18) and Katie Edwards (21:00) of Cloverdale finished 1-2 in the girls race. Meghan Beare (21:15) of Clear Lake was the only runner not from Cloverdale to crack the top five. After Beare, it was Cloverdales Anabelle Doyle (22:41) and Ariana Fernandez (23:20). She ran OK, Stanley said of Beares third-place finish, but I think she just didnt have it today. Kimberly English of Clear Lake came in sixth in 24:35. She was a standout, Stanley said of English. She improves each time. Cloverdale dominated in team scoring with 21 to St. Helenas 55 and Clear Lakes 64. JV boys Nate Falkenberg ran a strong second in the JV boys race, finishing in 20:40. He was the only non-St. Helena runner to crack the top five. Nate ran a real good race, Stanely said. He improved his time by 19 seconds from the last time we ran in Willits. Clear Lakes Jose Estrada came in ninth in 22:17 and he was followed to the finish line by teammates Cord Falkenberg (10th in 23:24), Scotty Mather (11th in 23:38) and Diego Tejeda (12th in 23:39). St. Helena won in team scoring with 20 points to Clear Lakes 44.
