Clearly Im the only one who enjoyed the AAliyah movie. I think where the problem lies with most people is that it was being compared to the phenomenal TLC movie wed all just watched not too long ago. The casting director for the TLC movie nailed it! They were able to find not only actors who looked like the characters they were portraying, but who had studied the people and had their characteristics down to perfection. I understand that its not always about the actors looking like the person whom they are playing (yall remember that light skin dude playing Dr. Martin Luther King Junior) but it plays a very important part when you want your viewers to connect to the person being portrayed. Ray Charles, Malcolm X, Tina Turner...those actors made you feel as though you were watching the real thing and not just a portrayal. I bet yall that James Brown movie would have done ten times better if Eddie Murphy had played the role ten years ago. I, personally, would not have done this movie if I could not get clearance to the artists songs. What connected fans with Aaliyah was her music. Her fans did not know her on a personal basis. They only had her music to connect with her. Her music would have to be the starring/leading role in the movie. So the fact that it lacked her original music...her love letters to her fans, was a major disservice to the telling of her life story that I think upset her true fans. My daughter is 15 and has been obsessed with Aaliyah for years. She likes Tommy Hilfiger because Aaliyah wore it. She has posters of Aaliyah on her wall and owns every CD and movie she starred in. My daughter didnt have Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to show her another side...more personal side of Aaliyah. All she has is her music. So the fact that the movie about Aaliyahs life lacked her music was a wasted effort on the younger generations-especially-part. Lastly, in this day and age its all about drama and ratchetness. Aaliyah personified none of that.
