Cleaving Understanding the Forgotten Mystery The priest stood up and he adjusted his eye glasses to have a clear view of the wedding pamphlet as he reads: Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh - Gen. 2:23. He exhorted as he gave his little piece of advice to the newlyweds. Not many people understood the word cleave as it applies to marriage. If they had understood it, marriages wouldnt have ended in divorce or separation because it becomes difficult to dismember a thing that has been jointed together by a strong bond. The word cleaving is more than leaving your fathers house as a man to build or rent an apartment and later get married. It is more than changing your surname to that of the man you said I do to. The New King James version says in Gen. 2:24, Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be JOINED to his wife, and they shall become one flesh (Emphasis added). Cleaving is joining and we know what it means to join, to fuse, weld, clip two things together very well. When you weld/melt/join two things together, its no longer two but one. So also is the union of a husband and wife, this is why the Bible says they shall become one, not two but one in everything. Some people dont understand the word Cleave, there is nothing like semi-cleave. If you choose to cleave to one another, then you will be one in every aspect. It is not by wearing the same dress material, it is about togetherness of the heart, soul and body. That is, Being united in every aspect of life. Cleaving covers all aspect: finances, health, joy and so on. You dont wait for your family to make decisions for you or report his or her personal issues to your family. Cleaving is settling arguments or quarrels with your spouse without a third party or hard feeling. And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed. Gen. 2:25.
