Client Thursday! Featuring a short excerpt from the book Im doing the final edit on this week, Act III, Omega, of Author Sarah M. Cradits book Midnight Dynasty. (Acts I and II are available now.) The Deschanel family is reeling under an awful burden. Will they be able to thwart the Curse? Below, we hear from the family matriarch, and one of my favorite characters in the series, Colleen. I love this section because Sarah accurately captures how many endure when the pain is so deep that even a shred of kindness would threaten your containment of overwhelming emotions. ~Indicates italics.~ Shared with permission. Opening the door, she found Noah on the other side. She resisted the temptation to throw herself into his arms and demand the comfort her husband would be eager to give. The family still needed her strength, and once her real grieving started, it would not be sated or stopped. Go, Darling, Ill stay with Ashley now, Noah said, laying a gentle hand against her face, intuitively understanding she would not want more. She allowed herself one moment of departure as she closed her eyes and welcomed the embrace. Planting a kiss on her husbands cheek, she tucked her purse under her arm, and went to comfort her other child. Colleen stepped through the double doors of the hospital—once familiar to her only as the place of her occupation, but now for so many other cruel reasons—and headed in the direction of Amelias room. As she rounded the long hallway toward the suite, she was startled to see her cousin Luther leaning against the wall, eyes closed in quiet contemplation. Luther, she called, as she approached him. Its nice of you to come by. ~Especially since today he deals with his own loss. The Curse claimed his niece, Annette, just shy of her twentieth birthday. Llewellyns daughter.~ Colleen, he replied, taking her hands in his as he raised them to his lips in a soft, tender gesture. How are you holding up? Colleen shook her head, words failing her. Quickly, she pulled her hands back, afraid the tenderness would break the dam holding back her tears. Surviving, she said finally. Surviving, he repeated, his lips twisting. Doesnt feel quite like that, but I second the sentiment nonetheless. I was so sorry to hear about Annette, Colleen comforted. Showing empathy to others was a safer place than receiving it. How are Llewellyn and Sophie? And Charlotte? I feel terrible I havent been by. Charlotte is returning home from college tomorrow for the service, Luther replied, his jaw tight as he shifted. My brother isnt taking calls, so even if you hadnt been dealing with your own troubles, he wouldnt have received you. Theres no need for guilt at a time like this. Colleen nodded. Every branch in this family, someone is grieving. No one has escaped. Jasper thinks he is next, Luther replied, with a tight, ironic smile. He always was dramatic. Colleen sighed and shook her head in response. In any case, everyone should hold their loved ones close until the storm passes. ~~~~~ Want more?
