Clients sometimes wonder why we take pets into the back room to do procedures. Reasons vary, but its not that we are hiding anything! Believe or not, many pets behave better if Mom is not hovering or fussing (similar to the reason we can trim toenails without a fuss when Mom reports the pet throws a hissy fit at home!). Some clients do not want to see us drawing blood or collecting urine as they are squeamish. Often times it is more time efficient for us to do it in the treatment area: staff is readily available as opposed to having to find them to come into an exam room, supplies are readily available in the treatment area, and particularly if more than one pet is being brought in, appointments are scheduled tightly (keeping prices lower) so that the staff and doctor may be getting the history or doing the exam and other things in the room while technicians/assistants collect samples or perform their types of procedures (nail trims, suture removals, etc) at the same time in another room. Just like a nurse or lab tech takes all your samples, rarely is the doctor doing these things for your pet. Also, the assistant obtaining the history may not be the person obtaining the samples; again, staffing is more readily accessible in the treatment area. Even the lighting may be better in the treatment area. Finally, just like most people are not as efficient when their boss is looking over their shoulder watching you do every little thing that you can do perfectly well if he werent standing there, the owner standing there sometimes intimidates staff so they dont do as good a job as they would if you werent breathing over their shoulder.... its human nature not to want to be criticized.
