Cliff Faraci probably wasnt thinking about health insurance - TopicsExpress

Cliff Faraci probably wasnt thinking about health insurance coverage while trying to save a 19-year-old driver trapped inside her wrecked car on the freeway in March 2013. When the cars engine ignited, the good Samaritan sustained burns and spent a week in the hospital. Two days after being discharged, he received notice from his insurer that his $165,000 hospital bill would not be covered, as Aetna did not deem his injuries medically necessary. After Faraci filed an appeal, which was denied, he took his case to the media. His case got an external review, made possible by the Affordable Care Act, which found that Aetna should pay half of his bill. Aetna later decided to not to bill Faraci for the remaining $82,500. As our health care columnist Wendell Potter says, becoming a squeaky wheel can make all the difference.
