Clifton Andrew Young was inducted into the Army on May 2, 1944. He received his basic training at Camp Roberson Arkansas. He was Private First Class Clifton A. Young 38668093,-395 Infantry Co D, 9th Division. He made rifle marksman June 29, 1944 and was sent to Mineral Wells, Texas to finish his training. He was put in heavy machine gunner # 605. He left for Germany December 22, 1944 and landed in Germany February 4, 1945. There is an attached clipping he mailed his wife just before his Co was hit. He was hit after crossing the Rhine River. His machine gun squad was shelled on March 15,1945 and he was the only survivor. He was sent to a hospital in Germany 3/16/45 and later transfered to France March 22, 1945. On the 28th of March they moved him to Mitchel hospital in New York and again transfered on April 29, 1945 this time to Kennedy General Hospital in Memphis, Tn. He stayed in Kennedy General until he was discharged December 3, 1945. He died at the age of 76 on December 6, 1989. He still had shrapnel in his back from the war. He was awarded Decorations and Citations. E.A.M.E Campaign Medal with one Bronze star, Purple Heart, Bronze star medal, Combat Infantryman badge, Victory medal, and American Theatre medal on March 16th, 1945.
