Clifton Village Green – via Clifton Hill with St Andrews Church behind ‘camera’. The opposite view to Adrienne xxx post from yesterday. From left to right, the side of 40 Cornwallis Crescent can be seen as the terrace then curves round to the side of number 40 and beyond, towards the Paragon. The horsemen are approaching the late 17th century Emmaus House, which was home for the Rev. John Hensman, vicar of St Andrews church(1819-1864). Hence the name, Hensmans Hill, alongside the house, on the corner of Regent St. This house remained residential until 1959, when it became part of La Retraite High School. Although the school closed in 1982 it has remained home to a community of La Retraite Sisters who organise retreats and courses there.
