Climate refugees Blog Oceanography No. 13 / Scaph Pro Team / Currently nearly three-quarters of major cities of the world and more than half of humanity living on or near the coast. By thirty, six billion people inhabit the coast, the equivalent of the current world population. All are threatened by the rising waters. The future of small island nations is even more worrying: some will be completely submerged. The archipelago of Tuvalu in the Pacific could disappear within fifty years and its people are in search of a haven. There are also fears a sharp increase in arid, where significant damage to agriculture, causing food shortages and population displacement. It is estimated that 150 million refugees are forced to migrate in 2050 to escape the floods and disruption of agriculture due to climate change.
