Clinging vs holding fast. Today in our Book of Mormon class a sister noted that those who “cling to” the rod of iron (1 Nephi 8:24) left after partaking of the fruit of the tree, but those who were continually “holding fast” stayed (verse 31). A lively discussion followed. Clinging carries a connotation of desperation, barely holding on, not a strong confident grasp. Holding fast implies confidence, determination, firmness. A brother pointed out after class that the holding fast folks “fell down,” implying worship. The clingers looked around and were embarrassed.
