Cllr. Rabbitte welcomes the announcement today by Sean Broderick, Galway Rural Development, that after months of persistence, a new supervisor and 20 additional TUS workers have been allocated to the Portumna, Woodford, Shragh areas. This move is long overdue, as the S/E Galway area has been operating under a skeletal support system for years- this summer Portumna and its surrounding areas have been operating with just 3 TUS workers and although they have been working hard, have found it hard to make any impact on the amount of work that needs doing, from basic maintenance to tidy towns. Cllr. Rabbitte says this should be the first step in bringing in new government supported schemes to the area and it is the vision for the future to put in place council supported FAS schemes. Woodford is a town where the Celtic tiger didn’t bite and the recession has left its scar on the main street of the town in the form of closed businesses and derelict premises, and so this is a welcome announcement for newly formed Woodford development which will also be supported by the intake of workers. Cllr. Rabbitte commented that ‘we are very fortunate to live in one of the most beautiful parts of the country, building a thriving tourism industry is not only within our reach but it is our key to success. Now we are one step closer. And with this announcement this morning from Sean Broderick (GRD) the future certainly looks bright for S/E Galway.’
