Clonmel in August promises to be spectacular with the launch of the inaugural Festival Cluain Meala which is a trio of the Busking, Heritage and Cycling festivals from the 3rd to 11th of August. The town promises to be transformed over 9 summer days with parades, bike races, gigs, concerts, fairs and open air parties and most events free. Festival Cluain Meala opens on the August Bank Holiday Weekend with the Suir Valley 3 Day International Cycle Race which promises to be their biggest and best race yet with 4 continental teams and the famous Sean Kelly’s RAS Team. There will be race starts and finishes in Clonmel each day throughout the weekend for the public to come along and cheer them on. The Cycling Festival takes over the centre of Clonmel on Sunday 4th August where there will be a funky bike parade, an international criterium and four fun sportives including a 5km family fun sportive. The 160km, 65km, 50km and 5km sportives are open to everyone and all entry details are on suirvalleycyclefestival. This is run is support of the charity Cycle 4 Sick Children. Festival Cluain Meala continues with the Clonmel Busking Festival from the 8th to the 11th August with over 75 bands busking and playing over 150 gigs all for free throughout the streets and pubs of Clonmel while simultaneously collecting funds for Crumlin Children’s Hospital. The festival has many great names coming including some of the very best in Irish live music including The Frank and Walters, Bagatelle, Johnny McEvoy, TR Dallas, Big Generator, Loudest Whisper and many more. The Clonmel Busking Festival comes to a climax on Sunday 11th August when O’Connell Street is again taken over with a Giant Street Ceilí at 1pm followed by a huge Beat 102 103 “Beat on the Street” party with music and entertainment from the south east with live DJ’s, dance offs and a live set from Key West. The Beat fleet will provide face painting, goodies and games. Festival Cluain Meala has a great heritage program including the Medieval Madness Summer Camp from the 6th to the 9th August featuring a mix of art and craft, combat school, archery, re enactment and hands on activities. This medieval inspired camp will delight young Lords and Ladies aged from 6 -13 yrs. Admission is €40 and contact the museum on (052) 61 34552 or email [email protected]. The Heritage Festival continues on Friday 9th August with the popular Medieval Inn trail which returns this year with two routes so put on your costume for a night of medieval merriment around the town. Register your interest at County Museum and costumes will be available for hire on the night or you can bring your own. There will be a concert in Old St Mary’s Church on Saturday 10th August with Banna Cluain Meala and the Colour Guard and special guest appearances by John Spillane and Woebegone. There will be a BBQ with tickets €5 and tickets can be got from Premier music. Festival Cluain Meala on Sunday 11th August will have the busking, ceili and Beat on the Street and the Gordon Street Carpark will be taken over for the Medieval Family Fun Day. This will be a magical end to the inaugural Festival Cluain Meala with lots of free medieval fun including Archery, Combat School, Climbing Wall, Re-enactments, Bui Bolg, 4 lane Climbing Wall, Mobile Farm, Arts and Craft Tents, Traditional Demonstrations, Comhaltas, Buskers, Artisan Food stalls, Cultural Stands and much more.
