Closed Captions (CC; not to be confused with Creative Commons) is pretty important and handy. Its also relatively simple to add them to your online videos. YouTube, Viddler, Vimeo, etc. all offer the ability to add subtitle (.srt) files to videos. If youre a beginner at creating subtitles, then you can use YouTubes built-in transcribing tool. Theres also amara.org (aka Universal Subtitles) which allows you to transcribe your videos on their site, then push the subtitles to YouTube — or wherever you have your video on the web. Amara also allows others to collaborate on transcribing and/or translating your videos. Cool! Crowd sourcing FTW! Heres a tid bit on Universal Subtitles: boingboing.net/2010/12/09/universal-subtitles.html Ive added closed captions to some of my most recent and most viewed videos on Viddler and YouTube. Its a lot of extra work though. It took me about an hour to write/position subtitles for a 9-minute video; 4 minutes takes about 30 minutes. And thats with a nice editor like Aegisub. Let me know if you would be interested in transcribing or translating any of my videos. Perhaps Ill bake you some cookies.
