Closure stares at another tea estate Joint Labour Commissioner to hold meetings to seek solution Siliguri, 11 August: After Jungpana Tea Estate in the Hills, another Tea Estate, Pahargumia, near Phansidewa in Siliguri is may issue ‘suspension of work’ notice if a tripartite meeting at the joint labour commissioner level scheduled for 13 August fails to settle the ongoing unrest in the plantation. Joint labour commissioner Mohammed Rizwan has called two tripartite meetings in his office on 12 and 13 August to seek a solution to the crisis at two plantations~Jungpana and Pahargumia. Mr Rizwan expressed hope that the meeting for Jungpana to be held tomorrow will yield positive results. He, however, did not comment on the Pahargumia crisis. What happened at Pahargumia?A group of workers allegedly led by the Trinamul Congress (Sovandeb group) gharaoed the managerial staff, including the manager until late at night on 10 July. There are four operating trade unions in the TE. According to planters, police had to interfere and they finally ‘rescued’ the manager. Since then, the management has been facing another problem after the workers barred at least three assistant managers from entering the tea estate. Trouble broke out after the management took action against a retired staff, who allegedly refused to leave his quarters, despite several reminders, sources said. The management allegedly took possession of the quarter, which was locked by the retired staff. The management also took action against the retired staff when he created trouble with the help of a group of workers and some people in the plantation on 10 July. The situation went out of hand when agitators blamed an assistant manager, who allegedly confined the retired staff, and beat him up. The agitators also alleged that the assistant manager had beaten up other workmen earlier, and demanded his removal. Though the matter was discussed at the Phansidewa block office so that law and order in the tea estate is maintained, the matter is yet to be resolved. sns
