Cloth Diaper Tip of the Day: Another question we get asked quite often is when you should introduce cloth trainers. Like when to start potty training, this is very subjective and depends on the child. I bought cloth trainers to use when we started the potty training process with my son. However, this proved to be counter productive because he saw them as a diaper even though they are really only like thick underwear. But after he got the hang of using the potty and got used to not wearing diapers (we kept him naked from the waist down while at home so he could use the potty freely), they began to serve their purpose by being relatively easy to pull up and down like underwear and containing urine during accidents MUCH better than underwear. And trust me, there WILL be accidents!!! From there, we used them just when we were out and about for extra accident protection but kept him in regular underwear while at home. Now, we only use them when he is at preschool and if we are going to be out all day. Since this is his first time at school, we knew he might one, regress some due to the changes in his routine, and two, get so involved in playing that he may forget to use the bathroom. The latter has definitely held true so far! For us, cloth trainers have been worth their weight in gold! We may not have used them quite like other parents but they have served as a valuable part of our potty training journey. Just the urine containment alone is enough to make me extol their virtues!! Picture cleaning up an accident that has run down your child’s leg to the floor, completely saturated their clothing and gotten their shoes wet OR cleaning up some damp shorts/pants and a wet trainer. There’s no comparison! Again, when to buy cloth trainers really depends on your child. With some children, you can use them full time, others part time but regardless they are a highly useful and convenient adjunct to the potty training process! ;-) --Gina
