Cloudy with a slight yellow cast to the sky; -2 degrees at 0730. It stays pretty cold. I remember the old Frenchman, Francois Gionet, who lived at the corner of Route 3 and the Benson Mines Road with his wife Maggie before the Little River garage was there. Francois had a camp on the river, on the J&L hunt club, just downstream from Watstandick, the camp that Wat Ripley, Stan Peabody and Dick Trimm had. I hunted there sometimes, and Francois would hunt with us--I didnt know his background, but he spoke in heavily accented Canadian French, the kind that the famous guide Wilfred Morrison used. The boys chuckled when he said after a deer drive, I fall on my hass in de clearance. In the winter, Francois would go to the river with his dog Girl who hed hitched to a small sled. Hed cut a good-size block of ice, then put it on the sled and send Girl back to camp. His shed gradually filled up with the ice blocks, which he covered with sawdust, and he had ice through the summer. There was always cold beer at Francoiss camp.
