Co-ordinator-General due to release response to Aquis environment report in Cairns today NICK DALTON THE CAIRNS POST DECEMBER 18, 2014 THE Queensland Co-ordinator-General’s response to the Aquis Environmental Impact Statement is expected to be released today. Barry Broe’s report will be his evaluation addressing all the potential impacts of the $8.15 billion project proposed for Yorkeys Knob. The EIS is considered one of the key components of the project which has been beset by probity investigation delays in Queensland. Next week the ACT Government intends releasing its probity report on the Aquis takeover of the Canberra casino and approving the transfer of its gaming licence which is critical for plans by Tony and Justin Fung to trade the business for a full year before floating the venture on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in 2016. In September Mr Broe called for additional information on the EIS and followed public consultation over six weeks. In October the Flanagan Consulting Group provided a 512 page response to the concerns raised by Mr Broe, which included transport and infrastructure impact assessment, population projections, lake management strategy and water quality, alternatives sites, a housing and accommodation plan, community consultation. The supplementary reports predicted the city could grow by 95,000 people above current estimates from 170,535 today to 265,393 in eight years. The report also scotched suggestions the resort could be built in the Cairns CBD or be scaled down at Yorkeys Knob. Flanagan’s managing director Pat Flanagan said the CBD was considered but it was concluded the sheer size of Aquis meant it could not be built on any one or a combination of sites in the city centre. The proposed development site for Aquis resort is at Yorkeys Knob, 13km north of the Cairns CBD, covering an area of 343ha on cane land. The resort could create more than 20,000 new jobs and 9300 during construction. The Co-ordinator-General’s assessment of the project does not consider a casino licence. BIG DEAL: The proposed $8.15 billion Aquis Great Barrier Reef Resort planned for Yorkeys Knob in Cairns.
