Coach Lang Message of the Week Jan 18, 2015 -Throwback Thursday- This past Thursday we had our Senior Night (Final home duel of the year) against Dixie High School. We gave it the theme of Throwback Thursday. We did the same thing last year and kind of like the tradition. All varsity wrestlers used any and all available Retro singlets from back in the day. Levi Bishop actually wore one from my freshman year back in 1994-95 season. 20 years ago. Wow! Weston Jeppson wore one that our team ordered my senior year in 1997-98. We dominated by winning ALL but 1 match (not including the forfeit we gave up at 195). Final score... 65-9. They are a tough team coached by an amazing man that is a good friend of mine for whom I have the highest respect. An interesting thing we noticed from this duel was that many of our wrestlers not only wore the Retro singlets, but they also went back to the absolute basic fundamentals of wrestling technique. Of particular emphasis was the Crossface-near ankle. A move that most wrestlers learn in little league (We teach it to the 4 year olds that show up to our clinics). On Thursday night, many of our wrestlers used it for takedown defense, as well as recovery when out of position, and even for positioning an opponent to secure a tighter pinning combination. -Life Lesson- Is there any part of your life that needs to emphasize the Retro approaches that consist of tried and proven basics and fundamentals? In business this could mean remembering to put the customer first and overwhelm them with value. As a boss it might mean making your employees feel like you care and that they are truly appreciated. As a parent it might be showing unconditional love for your children and communicating that through each childs dominant love language. In a marriage or relationship this might mean simply dropping everything you are doing and giving 100% attention to your partner and sincerely listen. In school this might mean practicing study habits involving the fundamentals of high levels of repetition to retain information (i.e. flash cards, etc.) And for ALL of us this can mean making time for one of the most basic of all human needs... Love. Love other people. Show genuine interest in them. Love yourself. You matter. Love your current circumstances including your trials for they help you appreciate the good times and provide opportunities for growth. Know that your efforts are good enough and that you are not going to please everyone. I actually believe that in any leadership position, you are NOT DOING YOUR JOB if everyone is happy with you. Interesting thought dont you think? What are the basic fundamentals that can make a difference in your life today? Have an amazing week! Coach Lang P.s.
