Coaching levels, and what they mean – BCU Level 1 September 11th, 2013 • By: Sandy Johnston • Uncategorized The BCU Level 1 Coach For many coaches the BCU UKCC Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Paddlesport is the first step on the coaching pathway. The qualification introduces the fundamentals of safe, ethical and effective coaching. Candidates are trained to coach basic skills to paddlers in any type of paddlesport craft in a flat-water environment. A range of coaching tips, tricks games and activities are built into the course, along with time spent developing technical and tactical understanding of these skills. The Level 1 Coach can plan, deliver, and review short coaching sessions; normally with the support of a more qualified coach. They can work with paddlers at any stage of development; receiving specific training to coach paddlers in their first year of activity and to run taster sessions. To complete the level 1 Coach you must: Decide if you wish to achieve the award as Bank Based or Boat Based Coach – Candidates who do not hold the required personal performance award (e.g. 2 star) may still complete the Level 1 or 2 coaching awards as bank based coaches. Bank-based Coaches have to demonstrate their ability to manage the coaching environment effectively from the shore and provide effective and appropriate safety cover. Whilst the two routes do exist, most courses will be open to both bank- and boat-based candidates. Some Level 1 courses may include these pre-requisites. You must be 16 years or over. Register with Home Nation Governing Body. In our case this is the Scottish Canoe Association (SCA). Two weeks are required to complete the registration process. This must be done before you are able to attend initial coach training. Attend a Training / Assessment Course – BCU UKCC Coaching awards are delivered by a range of course providers throughout the country. These individuals or centres are authorised by SCA to deliver the awards before submitting the course paperwork to SCA and BCU who will issue certification. Full details of course providers in Scotland are available in the Course Providers page on the SCA website and dates of courses can be found in the Events page. Registration will be required at each coaching level and will be the start of the validating process of your qualification and the means via which your coaching journey will be recorded. Following your course, your Training Director will forward the course paperwork to the SCA to carry out verficiation. Upon successful completion of the SCA checks, your details are passed to the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) and BCU Awarding Body for certification. As a BCU UKCC Level 1 coach you can now coach within the remit of the BCU Terms of Reference. You should be aware of your responsibilities as a coach.
