Coaching the national wheelchair rugby team for the Asian Para Games 2014! For six days, starting from 29th September, Mitrais’ staff Jenal Rahmawan and Roy Syahputra participated in the training camp for the wheelchair rugby team together with the Korean national wheelchair rugby team, in preparation for the upcoming Asian Para Games 2014, which will be held in Incheon, South Korea. “The Bali Sports Foundation received an invitation to join in the Asian Para Games 2014 so they put together a team to represent Indonesia and appointed Roy and I to coach them,” explained Jenal, who is also an active player in wheelchair basketball. As coaches, Jenal and Roy have been creative in making up for their limited experience in wheelchair rugby, falling back to their wheelchair basketball training drills to start the team’s training. Though, their team’s mettle was tested during the training camp with the Korean national team. “The Korean team’s coach demonstrated several training drills that we have not tried before,” stated Roy. “Our team went against the Koreans on the last day of the camp and the result was encouraging, though there is still much room for improvement. We are excited to face them again on the field in Incheon.” Jenal and Roy admitted that they both are using the learning-by-doing method in their coaching style. “We are all learning here, the team, Roy and I,” Jenal said with a laugh. “I realize that aside from techniques and strategies, having this opportunity to go to Incheon also shapes the characters of the athletes we’re training and it forces us to consider the influence we have on them as coaches. It’s quite a responsibility, but I’d like to think we’re giving this our best effort, and then some, and that’s all I can ask from any of us really.” Organized by the Bali Sports Foundation and supported by Mitrais, Jenal, Roy and their team will be leaving for Incheon on the 14th October 2014.
