Coal tipple at Bonnie Blue ~ SW VA. Coal is brought into the tipple where it is cleaned and sorted. The raw coal runs over various size screens in the tipple starting with small openings and going down to the larger openings. The different sizes are stored separately and loaded over different tracks. Tipples would wash the coal and treat it with oil to decrease the dustiness. Slack coal was often stored in a silo rather than a bin to reduce the risks of flash fires.
