Cocktails hurled at Bangladesh Agriculture University VC’s residence Pro-BNP teachers continue class boycott At least four cocktails exploded in front of the residences of the vice chancellor of Bangladesh Agriculture University (BAU) and his personal assistant at midnight on Monday. Campus and police sources said some unidentified hoodlums blasted at least two cocktails in front of the main gate of BAU VC Prof Dr Md Rafiqul Hoque’s residence at around 12:15am. The criminals also exploded two cocktails in front of the residence of the VC’s personal assistant Mohamamd Selim on the campus and fled the scene immediately by motorbike. The VC blamed the pro-hartal supporter Chhatra Dal and Chhatra Shibir activists for the blasts. Meanwhile, the BNP-Jamaat-backed teachers of the university continued the boycott of classes and examinations for the third consecutive days, protesting the alleged irregularities in recruitment of teachers and employees and the death threat made by a Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leader against one of their fellows. On the other hand, Ganatantrik Shikkhak Forum (GSF), a platform of the ruling party-backed teachers, urged the agitating teachers to put an end to the class boycott. In a written statement, Prof Dr Md Harun-Or-Rashid, GSF general secretary, alleged that the pro-BNP teachers are implementing political agenda to create unrest on the campus centring a trifling matter rather than solve it through democratic way. He also urged them to solve the crisis by holding discussion with the university authorities. Earlier, GSF formed a human chain in front of the Liberation War Monument Bijoy’71 protesting the ‘anti-student activities’ of a segment of teachers where over two hundred teachers, common students and employees took part. On the contrary, the opposition-backed teachers vowed to continue their ongoing agitation programme until the authorities concerned fulfill their demands. The pro-BNP teachers went on an indefinite strike from last Sunday. “We will not go back to the classes until the authorities bring the culprits to book and cancel the appointments of the teachers and employees who were employed in violation of rules and regulations,” said Prof Dr Md Abul Hashem, general secretary of Sonali Dal, the opposition-backed teachers’ association. Meanwhile, BAU VC Prof Dr Md Rafiqul Hoque, in a press briefing at his office, said, “The allegations of Sonali Dal are false and baseless.” He urged the agitating teachers to withdraw the strike for the sake of the university and the students.
