Coffee County deputy hit by car, wounds suspect with shot Posted: Monday, August 26, 2013 1:59 pm Dothan Eagle. A Coffee County Sheriff’s deputy fired seven shots at a person who hit him with a moving vehicle early Saturday morning, hitting the driver in the shoulder with one round. After fleeing, the suspect was apprehended several hours later and is currently at the Coffee County Jail with a charge of attempted murder. Chad Evans, 21, has also been charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance (crack cocaine and unnamed pills). He was treated and released at Medical Center Enterprise following his arrest at a Daleville residence. Evans’ hometown was listed as Enterprise. At about 3:30 a.m., the unnamed deputy responded to a call from an acquaintance living on Loftin Street in Enterprise, where the person there asked the deputy to do a drive through in the neighborhood. The deputy arrived in an unmarked vehicle. Soon after arriving, the deputy said a vehicle pulled up behind him and began to follow him from very close range. The deputy stopped his vehicle and stepped out to see who was in the vehicle behind him. At that point, Evans accelerated his vehicle and hit the deputy, who landed on Evans’ hood. The deputy pulled his firearm and fired two shots at the windshield of Evans’ vehicle. A third shot hit the hood of Evans’ vehicle. The deputy then fell off the hood. A fourth shot hit the rear window. It is believed that the deputy’s fifth shot hit Evans in the shoulder. The deputy fired two more rounds at the vehicle before Evans left the scene. Evans’ vehicle was found abandoned on Forehand Street. Tracking dogs were brought to the scene. The dogs tracked Evans’ scent to a point before they stopped, leading to law enforcement’s assumption that Evans had been picked up in another vehicle. Acting on tips, Daleville Police officers and Coffee County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Evans at a Daleville residence around 10:15 a.m. Saturday. Evans was initially taken to Medical Center Enterprise, as was the deputy who was hit by the vehicle. Evans was then taken to the Coffee County Jail. It was also determined that Evans had a pistol in his hand while he was in his vehicle, according to Chief Deputy Ronnie Whitworth. The Alabama Bureau of Investigation, Enterprise Police and the Coffee County District Attorney’s Office are each conducting investigations into the events.
