Cognitive Dissonance: This video focuses on politics and climate science... but this definitely applies to religious beliefs, too. Regarding religion, I remember hearing about a study in a college social psychology class that confirmed people were way more likely to change deeply held beliefs because they started emulating somebody they admired, than because of a logical argument. (In Bahai lingo: One thing and only one thing will unfailingly and alone secure the undoubted triumph of this sacred Cause, namely, the extent to which our own inner life and private character mirror forth in their manifold aspects the splendor of those eternal principles proclaimed by Bahá’u’lláh.) So, anyway, if two people hold strong opposing beliefs and continue trying to convince each other by debating, eventually the closing argument is going to come around to something like, Oh yeah? Well, youre a dumbdumb poopyhead; whaddaya think of that? https://youtube/watch?v=WBOn6l-voME
