Cognitive dissonance, I found was important in my healing and just understanding it has been vital in my recovery. Cognitive dissonance is a psychological defense mechanism commonly experienced during and after involvement with a narcissist. We can experience this when the truth and reality about something is too painful to even comprehend and certainly does not fit anywhere into our expectations and plans about life. When we hold two conflicting beliefs at the same time that is CD. In my situation with David, those two beliefs were: 1. He loves me. 2. He is cheating on me, deceiving me, manipulating me, creating chaos and causing me both emotional and physical harm.
