Cohoes council elects Signoracci as president By Danielle Sanzone, Troy/The Record Posted: 01/05/15, 7:42 PM EST COHOES In a decision Friday night, the Cohoes Common Council has a new council president — Ralph Signoracci, who has been a member of the legislative body since 2008. Former council President Dianne Nolin said it was “time for a change,” and the rest of the council agreed. Nolin nominated Signoracci at Friday’s meeting. She remains as vice president after a nomination for that position from Signoracci. “We’re all working closely together,” said Signoracci, a Cohoes native whose family has strong ties with Spindle City politics. “I think we’re going to do well going into this new year. Everyone on the council is an asset.” Signoracci, the 6th Ward representative, said that in his new position he will advocate for council members, help set agendas, sit on the board of managers and, if the mayor is out of town, serve as acting mayor. He said the legislative agenda is still being sketched out by the council. “I congratulate our new president and vice president,” said Cohoes Mayor George Primeau, who served on the council starting in 2000 and was vice president from 2002 to 2004 and president from 2008 until he became acting mayor and then mayor. “I’m looking forward to working with Ralph and I hope they keep the city going in the same direction that it is going in.” Newly elected Councilman Bill Ricard put out a statement. “I look forward to continuing to work with the 6th Ward council member in his new role as Common Council president,” he said. “I would also like to give a special thank you to Dianne Nolin, who served as the Common Council president over the past two years. Dianne brings extraordinary character, sound judgment and dedication to our legislative body and I look forward to her continued leadership in 2015 as the Common Council vice president. “These are challenging yet exciting times for Cohoes. Now more than ever, it is imperative that the legislative and executive branches of city government work together as equal partners to protect our community, strengthen our neighborhoods and advance our city.” Signoracci has a degree in political science from The College of Saint Rose and lives with his family, including his wife and three sons, on Van Schaick Island. Nolin, who is employed at Marra’s Pharmacy, said she had a conversation with Ralph and they agreed that “change would be good.” “I think we’ll all be working together since we have a lot of common goals. I’m looking forward to a good year,” she added. In her time as president, she said she was proud of helping to open communication even more with constituents. “We’re reaching across the community to maintain Cohoes as a pleasant place to reside,” she said. Primeau said Nolin did a “nice job” as president and he was surprised she did not continue on. The council president position includes the approximate $13,000 annual salary received by every member of the council along with another more than $2.500. Danielle Sanzone may be reached at 290-8362.
