Coke have finally done it! This is called Green-Washing. Many environmentally unfriendly corporations use this marketing tool, to make the consumer feel as though they are choosing the best option for both their health and the health of the planet. Yes, these bottles are made from 30% plant matter and are fully recyclable, but it is extremely important to note that they are still not biodegradable, at all. Also, we must acknowledge that in order to manufacture a recycled plastic product, approximately 75% of brand new materials are required each time. Recycled plastic still ends up with the rest of it - In our water ways and landfill. This has a very concerning environmental impact, which affects the whole of our ecosystem on a level that is difficult to imagine. Even if a plastic product is made of biodegradable plastic, there is currently no proof in it breaking down completely, since enough time hasnt passed since it was introduced. It is probable that it will break down into small particles and that it will never really completely disappear. As already stated, non-renewable resources (new plastic materials) are still required for the manufacture of recycled plastic products. Plastic, in any form, is not an environmentally sustainable solution. By all means, we should keep recycling, as escaping all plastic products in todays society is extremely difficult, and recycling is still a step in the right direction, but we must remain honest with ourselves by admitting that this product, and many alike, are still not good enough for the planet. This planet needs more than the current economic mould and social structure could really ever offer. We cant rely on corporations to offer the best solution, because they will always put revenue first. We shouldnt ever promote that something is a green product when it is still so far from being such. We are being misguided and distracted. Green-washing is everywhere at the moment. If a label is green, includes a picture of a tree, is designed to look like recycled cardboard or uses the word eco I am still very cautious of it. I still use a lot of unnecessary plastic/packaging when I know I shouldnt. Perhaps we can all work together to remain honest & focussed in minimising our packaging altogether?
